Don’t Look So Surprised When I Know Where You’ve Been

Amidst a milestone of 500 professional rejections, Darius Frank created Don’t Look So Surprised When I Know Where You’ve Been—a self-portrait that serves as an intimate examination of identity. In this work, Frank seeks catharsis through self-depiction. As a child of poverty burdened by the intersectionality of hardship, Frank uses contrasting hues of blue and red to render themselves. These competing tones separate the subject from the environment, setting the stage for conflict. The softened subject, however, conveys a quiet surrender—an acceptance of self within the chaos.
